Alpha Hospitals opens new psychiatric intensive care unit for Young People in Greater Manchester

Alpha Hospitals is opening a new Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) / Low Secure service for Young People in Greater Manchester, enabling patients in the North West aged eleven to eighteen years old, to be treated closer to home.

The demand for emergency beds for young psychiatric patients in the UK is extremely high.  Young People currently needing this service have to be treated a long distance from home.

The new self-contained hospital on the Alpha Hospital Bury site will open in August 2011.

It follows the success of its unique service for Young People in Woking and will provide an emergency admission service for Young People with complex psychiatric conditions.  Patients will be admitted to an assessment and admission unit where they can quickly stabilise, enabling them to then move along the care pathway.

Alpha Hospitals works closely with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) teams to ensure discharge preparation is planned appropriately and that the length of stay remains at a minimum.  The Adolescent Service at Alpha Hospital Woking in Surrey has an average length of stay of 36 days.

Dr Albert Okoye, the Clinical Director of Adolescent Services for Alpha Hospitals said:

“We have developed a unique programme for Young People which enables them to feel safe and start the process of recovery very quickly.  Already successfully established in our hospital in Woking, we see patients from all over the country.”

Patricia Hodgkinson, CEO at Alpha Hospitals said:

“The successful outcomes for patients at our existing adolescent services in Woking lay an excellent foundation on which to further develop the care we provide across the country. The new services in Greater Manchester forms part of a wider development plan for improving services in this field.”
